There is no debate about srs systems being the best tool to learn japanese, and anki is one of the best srs apps out there. anki does have one tiny flaw. the web version of anki is free for all, and if you are an android user the app is free for you.. Japanese-english dictionary is a free application for android-devices, which is a bi-directional english-japanese dictionary that allows you to find quickly the right translation for a word in english or japanese.. Japanese hub for windows phone is the best app for learning japanese that i've seen. it had lessons with culture notes, flashcards, vocabulary, kanji, quizzes, and a dictionary. i had to buy 4 apps on ios for the same functionality..
As regards to learning kanji i prefer any app that forces me to write rather than one that shows me flashcards. i found an app on android called oxford kanji tutor which presents you with the english and romaji/hiragana, and requires you to write the character. for me this really augmented my understanding of the characters..
